If you’re not that familiar with eye care, you’re probably one of the lucky ones. You have good eyesight, but the only thing is you could wind up on the other side of things in the blink of an eye. Whether you’re facing an eye ailment or wanting to work on eye care to prevent future illnesses, this information can help you.

The best advice in eye care is to have regular eye exams. Especially if you’ve reached the age of 40, your eyes need more attention than ever before. Various diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, can have a very negative impact on vision. Regular examinations will ensure eye health is protected.

Always wash your hands before you touch your eyes. Your fingers are covered with bacteria because your hands touch surfaces that other people have touched. If you touch your eyes without washing your hands, you will transfer bacteria to your eyes and cause irritation or even an infection. Therefore, before touching your eyes, wash your hands with soap and water.

Though you may know that during the summer it is a good idea to wear sunglasses, you may not know that it is just as important in the winter. When you think about how snow reflects sunlight, it makes a lot of sense. UV rays from the sun can still hurt your eyes on cloudy days, even though it is not bright.

Know your family eye history. Many eye problems are hereditary, so it is important that you and your doctor have this information. Talk with the older members of your family to get a good picture.

Omega-3 fatty acids are known to be excellent for eye care. Use foods that have this nutrient as part of your daily diet. Such foods can include dark-green, leafy veggies, as well as halibut, salmon and tuna. Eat a minimum of one serving every day.

If you work in an environment where particles or objects may become airborne, wear safety goggles. Though many construction sites require them, other professions may not. Look around at your work environment. Consider how the various objects may encounter your eyes. If you perceive potential danger, purchase a pair of safety glasses.

Make sure you have good light when you are reading, especially if the book you are reading has fine print. Although your eyes will not be damaged by reading in dim light, the eye strain it causes will make your eyes feel tired. You should take a break occasionally while reading, especially if your eyes begin to feel tired.

To help your eyes when using a computer, use a blinking technique. When you have been using the computer for a half hour or so, look away at something distant. While doing this, blink several times. This change in focus will allow your eyes to relieve strain and focus better on your computer screen.

If you use eye drops to sooth your eyes because allergens irritate them, you should use them sparingly. Make sure not to overuse them. If eye drops aren’t adequately soothing your eyes, talk to your doctor about alternative treatments.

Make sure to have your eyes looked at regularly. Many people, particularly if they do not wear glasses or contacts, have not been to the eye doctor in years. You should go at least once in your 20s and at least twice in your 30s to make sure everything is on track. Once you hit forty, try and visit the eye doctor every three years or so. And, when you reach age 65, you should go every other year.

To soothe puffy eyes, place a slice of a cold cucumber on top of each eyelid. The coolness from the cucumber slices will calm the puffiness and give your eyes relief. Leave the slices on your eyes for about ten minutes before you sleep at night to reduce minor inflammation.

Use cucumber slices on puffy eyes. Place cold cucumber slices on your eyelids for about ten minutes. You can use a soaked tea bag to help reduce any inflammation and eye puffiness.

If you use the computer often for work, give yourself short breaks every now and then. Your eyes need to rest so that can re-energize and remain healthy. Walk around the office or go outside and get a bit of fresh air to get an energy boost.

Although contacts are a great alternative to glasses, they need to be handled with care. For instance, you cannot just put them anywhere when not using them; be sure to properly store them. Also, do not wear your contacts if you are experiencing a small eye problem, as they can create bigger issues.

Get enough sleep. A lot of people don’t understand how important sleep is to their body, including their eyes. When you don’t get enough rest, you start to have eyestrain, which can lead to painful headaches and a sense of sleepiness and fatigue. Just make sure that you get 7-8 hours of sleep a night so that your eyes can rest.

In order to keep your eyes healthy, make sure your diet is rich in omega-3 fats. The omega-3 fats protect the little blood vessels in your eyes. They can also protect your eyes from dry eye syndrome and macular degeneration. Try to incorporate into your diet some foods high in omega-3 fats like sardines and wild salmon.

If you have never experienced a condition with your eyes, then consider yourself blessed. All types of different things can happen, and working towards prevention is key so that you do not suffer from poor eye health. Instead, you are going to ensure that you keep your eyes in the best condition.
